{"id":16258,"date":"2025-02-20T12:01:38","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T12:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/?p=16258"},"modified":"2025-02-20T12:01:40","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T12:01:40","slug":"nma-welcomes-report-on-ai-copyright-from-university-of-cambridges-minderoo-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/blog\/2025\/02\/20\/nma-welcomes-report-on-ai-copyright-from-university-of-cambridges-minderoo-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"NMA Welcomes Report On AI &amp; Copyright From University of Cambridge&#8217;s Minderoo Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Responding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mctd.ac.uk\/policy-brief-ai-copyright-productivity-uk-creative-industries\/\">a report from The Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy<\/a> at the University of Cambridge that cautions against the government\u2019s proposals to degrade copyright law in favour of AI firms, News Media Association chief executive Owen Meredith has said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe findings of this expert academic report echo what creators have been saying for months: that there is no evidence that a sweeping new text and data mining exception will stimulate growth or lead to AI innovation and investment in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe agree economic analysis of the impact of an \u2018opt-out\u2019 is urgently needed, something that the government has so far failed to do despite their plans to put the UK\u2019s \u00a3126 billion creative industries at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also welcome the report\u2019s clear statement that scraping works from the internet without permission is prohibited under UK law and agree that the government should adopt transparency requirements to ensure that the provenance of data in AI models is disclosed to the rights holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaken together, the report\u2019s recommendations closely mirror the principles of Baroness Beeban Kidron\u2019s copyright and AI amendments which have been voted into the Data (Use and Access) Bill. We hope the government and MPs scrutinising the provisions will consider the findings of this report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy is an independent team of academic researchers at the University of Cambridge working to ensure that digital technologies work for people, societies, and the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These recommendations emphasize the need for economic analysis of the impact of an &#8216;opt-out&#8217;
