Hundreds of national and local newspapers celebrated the annual campaign coordinated by the News Media Association by celebrating the vital contribution trusted journalism makes to our democratic society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalism Matters is the news media industry’s annual campaign to shout about the benefits journalism creates for our society. Last year, the campaign launched with an op-ed from the Prime Minister<\/a> who called journalism the \u201clifeblood of democracy\u201d and that publishers should have control over and seek payment for their work as AI technology continues to transform our economy and way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the parliamentary reception to kick off Journalism Matters, both the Culture Secretary, Shadow Culture Secretary and Eastern Daily Press editor,<\/a> Richard Porritt, spoke of the importance of safeguarding press freedom to a room of around 100 parliamentarians, publishers and journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run by the News Media Association, Journalism Matters is a chance for news media titles to tell their readers about the important job they do and why they do it. Anyone can take part by voicing their support for their newspaper and highly trusted journalism which underpins democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NMA also launched a new study<\/a>, which showed that the majority of Brits valued trusted journalism more than ever, as well as a video showcasing the vital role local journalists hold in their communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsworks also released fresh research<\/a> to mark the campaign. The then justice minister Heidi Alexander MP also published an op-ed<\/a> for the campaign speaking of the critical role of the media in reporting on the riots and her commitment to the principle of open justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In previous years, the campaign has seen support from high profile figures such as HM Queen Elizabeth II and senior politicians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
